Media: Indonesian Boy Positive For H5N1

# 5471

It has been an unusually active bird-flu day with 5 positive cases announced out of two nations; Egypt (4), Cambodia (1), and now a media report out of Indonesia claiming 1 additional case.

Ida at the Bird Flu Information Corner – a joint venture between Kobe University in Japan and the Institute of Tropical Disease, Airlangga University, Indonesia – has a translation of a news report from the Indonesia newspaper, Koran Tempo.

It should be noted that this declaration appears to be by local doctors, and not the Ministry of Health.  Also, we are not provided with any details on how the diagnosis was made.

Presumably lab tests have detected the H5N1 virus, but that detail is not included in the following report.  Until the MOH certifies this diagnosis, I will cautiously consider this an unofficial positive case.
