WHO MERS-CoV Update – Nov 4th

The World Health Organization has released, through their Global Alert & Response website, an update on the MERS Coronavirus that confims  a case we first learned about last Thursday (see KSA MOH Announces New MERS Case/Fatality), but doesn’t add much in the way of details.

 

 

Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) - update

4 November 2013 - WHO has been informed of an additional laboratory-confirmed case of infection with Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) from Saudi Arabia.

The patient is a 56-year-old woman with underlying medical conditions from the Eastern Region. She became ill on 26 October 2013 and died on 30 October 2013. She had no contact with animals, but had contact with a previously laboratory confirmed case.

Globally, from September 2012 to date, WHO has been informed of a total of 150 laboratory-confirmed cases of infection with MERS-CoV, including 64 deaths.

Based on the current situation and available information, WHO encourages all Member States to continue their surveillance for severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) and to carefully review any unusual patterns.
