The roster of new H7N9 cases continues to expand, with 9 new cases announced today, including what appears to be a family cluster in Guangxi province.  While additional cases could be announced later in the day, the following cases have been announced by three provinces across Eastern China.

First, from Guangxi province, we learn of a new case for the second day in a row.  Xinhua News reported on this family cluster today in a report called China reports 11 new H7N9 human cases.  Two of these eleven cases were actually reported yesterday, accounting for the discrepancy in the totals.

Two new cases were reported in Hengxian County in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, according to the regional health and family planning commission. They were a 41-year-old woman, in critical condition, and his 5-year-old son.

While a family cluster does not necessarily indicate H-2-H transmission, since two or more people in a household could conceivably share a common environmental exposure, we have seen several instances where limited transmission is believed to have occurred. We’ll have to wait for more details from the epidemiological investigation to know what category this cluster falls into.

Here is the report from Guangxi’s MOH (h/t Sharon Sanders at FluTrackers).
