OIE Notification: More CSF Outbreaks In Wild Boar - Gifu, Japan

Gifu Prefecture, Japan - Credit Wikipedia

#13,554

Just over 3 weeks ago, in Japan: MAFF Confirms Classical Swine Fever Outbreak we saw the first detection of CSF in Japan in 26 years in a breeding pig at a farm in Gifu Prefecture.  Since then, the OIE has reported the finding of the virus in dead wild boar discovered within 10 km of that farm.
Today we have a follow up from the OIE - one that brings the total number of infected wild boar discovered in Gifu Prefecture to 10, out of 89 that have been tested.
Like African Swine Fever (ASF), CSF is highly contagious, and can be economically devastating for pork producers, although it tends to produce lower mortality in pigs. Unlike with ASF, there is a vaccine for Classical Swine Fever.
Neither disease is considered zoonotic threat.
Up until 3 weeks ago, Japan was one of just 35 countries (see map below) that had been certified by the OIE as being free of the disease, with their last outbreak reported in the early 1990s.  With Japan's recent suspension, that number now stands at 34.

Epidemiological comments

  • (1) Removal of shipping restriction zone (SRZ): On 00:00 of 29 September, shipment restrictions, which were established 10 km radius of the affected farm, were lifted as 17 days have passed without positive results of the test conducted in the pig farms located within SRZ after the completion of full implementation of control measures (stamping out, disinfection etc.).
  • (2) Wild boars reported in this follow up report: All carcasses of four dead wild boars were located within 10 km radius of the affected farm. The local government of Gifu Prefecture confirmed all of the cases as CSF positive by PCR.
  • (3) Summary of the wild boar surveillance: As of 1 October 2018, 89 wild boars in Gifu Prefecture have been tested and found that 10 are positive and the rest (79) are negative (*) Among the other prefectures, 41 wild boars in 26 prefectures were tested and all found to be negative (**).
(*): Gifu prefecture has been conducting CSF testing of dead/captured wild boars since 13 September. (**): All reported dead wild boars are subjected to CSF testing since 14 September.
