Japan MAFF: CSF Expands to 7th Prefecture & 46th Farm Outbreak (Saitama)

#14,458

While much of the rest of Asia continues to either prepare for, or battle against, the arrival of African Swine Fever (ASF) - Japan has, for more than a year - been dealing with the return of Classical Swine Fever (CSF) after an absence of 26 years.
What began with a single farm outbreak in Gifu Prefecture in September of 2017 has now expanded to 46 farm outbreaks (and wild boar detections) across 5 Prefectures, and (thus far, only) infected wild boar detected in two adjacent prefectures (Toyama & newly added Ishikawa).
Much like ASF, CSF does not affect human health, but it can be devastating to the pork industry. Classical Swine Fever, however, is caused by a different virus (genus Pestivirus, family Flaviviridae).

We've the latest (translated) outbreak report from Japan's MAFF, followed by excerpts from the latest OIE report, detailing wild boar detections across 7 Prefectures.

(3) For this reason, along with the epidemic prevention measures for feeding pigs of the farm, feeding pig farms (the prefecture Kamikawa-cho) the farm and feeding management who is the same also with the suspected affected animals of swine fever, take quarantine measures masu (suspected affected animals total: 2,084 horses (1 units 2 farm)).

While this territorial expansion of CSF wasn't entirely unexpected, it further complicates the eradication of this disease from Japan, and reinforces how difficult - once released - it can be to put a biological genie back into the bottle.
