Upcoming COCA Call (May 11th): Updated Recommendations for COVID-19 Vaccine Use

#17,442

Nearly 3 weeks ago the CDC endorsed the FDA's recommendation to authorize a second bivalent booster shot for specific groups (primarily those > 65 and immunocompromised patients), and a streamlining of the booster process for practically everyone else.

Uptake of this new vaccine, which was released in the fall of 2022, has been disappointing (see chart below), with only about 17% of eligible Americans taking the jab.

While COVID has been downgraded from pandemic status, the virus continues to exact a heavy toll, making the vaccine an important public health measure (full disclosure: I got my 2nd bivalent booster yesterday).

With recent changes to the nation's COVID vaccination strategy, this week the CDC will hold their first COCA call since late February, which will focus on updated recommendations for the COVID-19 Vaccine.

These presentations are often technical, and are of greatest interest to clinicians and healthcare providers, but also may be of interest to the general public.

As always, If you are unable to attend the live presentation, these (and past) webinars are archived and available for later viewing at this LINK.

Updated Recommendations for COVID-19 Vaccine Use

Overview

During this COCA Call, presenters will discuss updated COVID-19 vaccine recommendations by age group and for those with immunocompromise. They will also highlight optional COVID-19 vaccine doses for specific populations. With this simplified schedule, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continues to recommend that everyone stay up to date with recommended COVID-19 vaccines to better protect themselves from severe illness and death. Most people in the United States have not yet received an updated (bivalent) mRNA COVID-19 vaccine, with uptake at less than 17 percent.
