Indonesia: Media Reports New Victims

Two reports this morning, one person supposedly verified as having the H5N1 Virus in Jakarta, and another of a suspected bird flu death in Solo, a town about 500 km from Jakarta.

 

 

 

Indonesia records 93 bird flu patients

JAKARTA (Antara): Indonesia Thursday recorded 93 bird flu cases across the country with the latest patient is now being hospitalized in a hospital in Jakarta, an official says.

 

The latest patient was identified only as R, who was tranferred from Carolus Hospital in Central Jakarta to Sulianti Saroso bird flu referral hospital on April 2, 2007, said Ningrum, a staff with the Health Ministry, Thursday.

 

"The laboratory test has confirmed of H5N1 positive," Ningrum was quoted by Antara news agency as saying.

 

The Jakarta resident was believed of having the bird flu virus after making a direct contact with a bird. The capital is among worst Indonesia's cities affected by bird flu.

 

Indonesia has recorded a total of 93 bird flu patients with 72 of them died, the world's highest death toll of Avian Influenza virus. (**)

 

 

 

 

Indonesian man dies of suspected bird flu

JAKARTA, April 5 (Xinhua) -- An Indonesian man who has developed bird flu symptoms died Thursday at a hospital in the Central Java town of Solo and could be the 73rd bird flu casualty in the country if his blood sample is tested positive.

 

The patient, identified only as Suramto, 29, died at the Moewardi Hospital after being treated since March 30, reported leading news website Detikcom.

 

His body was packed in a plastic bag and relatives were banned from opening the coffin, a standard procedures for bird flu victims, the report said.
