Suspect Cases In Indonesia

# 2931

While we don’t get a lot of `official’ news out of Indonesia, local media reports continue to paint a picture of ongoing outbreaks of avian flu among domesticated poultry, and sporadic human cases.

Depkes, the Indonesian Health Ministry, no longer confirms human H5N1 infections in `real time’.   Instead, they provide summaries at irregular intervals, usually every few months.

Today, local media reports include stories about a 2 year-old in isolation in Pekanbaru, the capital of Riau province – and two people in intensive care in Garut, Indonesia.

"Now the condition both of them have indeed improved." However we were still being waiting for results of the blood test of the two patients from the laboratory, said Widjajanti, on Tuesday (24/3/2009). (djo/djo)

As always, these are just `suspect cases’, and are likely to remain suspect until the Health Ministry decides to release test results on them.

There are  a great many diseases, many of which are common in Indonesia, that could produce similar symptoms.  So the fact that they are being treated as bird flu cases doesn’t necessarily mean they really have the virus.

Hopefully, in time we will get more details on these, an other cases.
