Vietnam: Additional Bird Flu Suspect Hospitalized

# 2913

Over the past 24 hours, in some of the reports on the death of the 3 year-old from Dong Thap Province yesterday,  we have seen a few vague references to another suspect case from the same area.

This morning the Voice of Vietnam (VOV) has an article where they report on a 4 year-old girl who is hospitalized with serious pneumonia, and who is suspected to have the H5N1 virus.

A hat tip to KobieT, who relayed this link on Twitter this morning.

Patient suspected of having bird flu

A four-year-old patient in Chau Thanh district, Dong Thap province, has shown symptoms of the H5N1 virus, according to the director of the district medical centre, Nguyen Thanh Son.

When hospitalized on March 19, Nguyen Thi Thanh Tuyen suffered breathing difficulties as a result of serious pneumonia. Initial examinations show that the little girl did not eat poultry but there were three dead birds found 100m from her house.

Samples from the dead birds were taken to a regional veterinary agency, while Tuyen was brought to the Hospital for Tropical Diseases based in HCM City.

Relevant agencies have sterilized the area around Tuyen’s house and taken other preventive measures.

On March 19, a three-year-old boy from the same district died of the H5N1 virus after being treated at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases.

Note: There may still be another suspect case, given that some of the news reports have spoken of `another adult suspect’ in the area.

This excerpt is from a report by Thanh Nien Daily:

Also Thursday, another adult patient from Dong Thap was transferred to the Tropical Diseases Institute displaying the same symptoms.

We’ll have to wait to see if either of these cases (assuming there is more than one) test positive for the H5N1 virus.
