FRANCE: MOA Announces 11 New Outbreaks Of H5N8

#12,181

After reporting only 10 new outbreaks in the 7 days leading up to yesterday, overnight the French MOA has added 11 additional outbreaks, bringing the total since the first week of December to 187 farms.   Added, for the first time, is an outbreak from the department of Haute-Garonne.

Additionally, 5 more detections of the virus in wild birds was announced.

It should be noted that H5N8 (and to a much lesser extent, H5N5 and H5N2) are being reported almost daily across Europe, but we don't tend to get daily updates from most of these countries as we do from France and the UK.

The most recent tally from Germany (dated 1/26/17) lists outbreaks in 36 poultry flocks and 7 zoos, and the detection of the virus in wild birds from 15 states. But the past week has seen a number of new cases reported in the media.

While the numbers appear vary from week to week, the threat does not appear to have dissipated fully in any of the affected European countries (including  Hungary, Austria, Denmark, the Netherlands, Poland, Bulgaria, France, the Czech Republic, the United Kingdom and Italy).

The last European-wide statistics from the ESA (as of Jan 22nd) list H5N8 1,083 detections,  including 525 in wild birds (61 different species affected), 542 flocks affected, and 16 outbreaks in Zoos.

Those numbers do not include LPAI outbreaks, the recent handful of HPAI H5N2 and H5N5 outbreaks, or any data from the past week. By just about any metric you'd care to apply, this is the largest avian flu epizootic we've seen in Europe to date.
