Malaysia: Media Reports Of Additional Outbreaks Of H5N1 In Poultry

Not quite a week ago, in OIE Notification: H5N1 Returns To Malaysia After Nearly A Decade,we looked at the history of H5N1 in Malaysia, and its recent detection along their border with Thailand.

Today Malaysian media sources are reporting the virus has been detected in 8 additional locations, spread across two districts (Kota Baru & Pasmir Mas) in Malaysia's Kelantan state.

These new outbreaks will undoubtedly be of concern not only to Malaysia - but closely watched by Singapore and neighboring Thailand - as it suggests that H5N1 is becoming more active and on the move again in Southeast Asia.


H5N1: Bird flu spreads to 5 villages in Kota Baru; Cases detected in Pasir Mas

KOTA BARU: Avian flu H5N1 which was earlier detected in Kampung Pulau Tebu in Tunjong here has spread to five other villages in the district, Veterinary Services Department director general Datuk Dr Kamaruddin Md Isa said today.

He said the disease had also been confirmed in three villages in Pasir Mas.

The villages​ affected in Kota Baru were Kampung Chabang Tiga Sakit, Kampung Gertak Lembu, Kedai Mulong, Kampung Padang Layang and Kampung Kota.

In Pasir Mas, the areas involved were Kampung Becah Semak, Kampung Tempoyak and Kampung Kedondong.

"The cases in Pasir Mas were not spread from Kampung Pulau Tebu. They happened about the same time," he said.
