Over the past 3 weeks - for the second year running - we've seen HPAI H5N6 reported in both Japan and South Korea, almost certainly carried there by the fall bird migration now taking place across the Northern Hemisphere (see Sci Repts.: Southward Autumn Migration Of Waterfowl Facilitates Transmission Of HPAI H5N1).
Last winter, H5N6 was also reported in Taiwan, but was not detected until early February (see Taiwan BAPHIQ: HPAI H5N6 Found In Dead Goose).Over the next couple of months, in addition to more detections in wild birds, the H5N6 virus sparked at least 14 outbreaks in poultry flocks across the island of Taiwan (see OIE 24/07/17 Final report).
Making an earlier appearance this year, we've the following (translated) report of a dead black-faced spoonbill which has tested positive for the H5N6 virus, which has been posted on the Tainan City government website. This report provides warnings to the public about contacts with wild birds, advice to local agricultural interests, and provides information on the steps being taken by the government to contain any possible outbreak.

Taiwan is on the migration route for migratory birds. In autumn each year, migratory birds begin to migrate from habitat to the south of Taitung. These migratory birds may spread the epidemic around the world. They are now administered by the National Taiwan River Park on December 1, (106) At Tucheng, officers noticed one death-faced black-faced spoonbill, which was confirmed as H5N6 highly pathogenic bird flu on December 4 after delivery of the test.
In order to prevent the bird flu and safeguard the health of the public, the Animal Health Inspector immediately dispatched disinfection vehicles to step up the implementation of the disinfection of birds and poultry farms and roads in the area around Annan District. The poultry farms continued to monitor the poultry birds in surrounding areas. Within 5 km radius of the pick- Conducted mobility control, sample monitoring and interview counseling. All 9 white broiler farms were healthy except for empty spaces. Dongbao Animal Protection Department is still continuing to strengthen the city's poultry poultry and surrounding public roads disinfection work.
In early February this year, H5N6 bird flu was detected in the ducklings in the Water Pheasant Teaching Park, Guandian District, and H5N6 bird flu was also detected in the wild pheasant that died in Qilou District in the same month. In the 104-year-old Black-faced Spoonbill H5N6 was detected as a highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (H5N6). Although H5N6 was not the first example, the Animal Husbandry Department had started anti-epidemic activities in accordance with the relevant standard operating procedures and strengthened the biological safety precautionary measures on poultry farms. Please do not panic.
Animal Husbandry Service urged people engaged in outdoor activities should not touch the birds or their excrement in the wild directly. After birdwatching and ecological education activities in the wild, wash their hands frequently with soap. If the body develops cold symptoms or fever after outdoor activities, Wear a mask and seek immediate medical attention.
In addition to strengthening the publicity and protection of livestock and poultry safety hardware and software facilities for poultry farmers, the poultry industry should continue to implement the car access control, personnel, vehicles, transport vehicles, appliances to be thoroughly cleaned when disinfection, the implementation of every Wednesday Inside and outside the poultry disinfection work together to prevent the outbreak and spread. Another poultry farm not completed within the deadline poultry house and feeding area fencing facilities, according to the Prevention and Control of Animal Infectious Diseases NT 30,000 yuan fine not more than 150,000, after the bird flu was cull animals and destruction Items, no compensation.
Timing In the winter, the outbreak of the international bird flu raged. The neighboring South Korea detected a H5N6 highly pathogenic bird flu in a duck farm in November this year (106). Coupled with the potential danger of migrating southward to Taiwan, The Bird Monitoring System has found that (wild) birds can carry the new H5N6 subtype of avian influenza virus. The Animal Husbandry Service again urged poultry operators in this Municipality to exercise vigilance and implement biosecurity measures in their poultry houses. Whether the facilities are functioning properly and the physiological status of poultry are observed. If any abnormalities or outbreaks of animals are found, they should be notified immediately to the Animal Protection and Protection Department. Do not hide the epidemic so as to prevent the spread of the epidemic.
