China MOA Reports 4 New Outbreaks Of African Swine Fever

#13,485

The pace of new ASF outbreaks in China continues to increase, with 4 new reports (3 in Anhui, 1 in Heiliongjiang) already posted on China's Ministry of Agriculture website today. This brings China's total to 13 outbreaks across 6 provinces in just over a month.
This is the largest one-day total we've seen since ASF was first announced in Liaoning Province in early August, and propels Anhui Province into an unenviable lead with 6 outbreaks.
First, two translated reports from the Chinese MOA website, then I'll return with a couple of reports on the steps that some of China's neighbors are taking to try to keep this contagion from spreading to their countries.

ASF is so hardy, and so contagious, that even dried or cured pork products are believed capable of spreading the virus.  As a result, travelers coming from ASF endemic areas are being warned not to bring back foodstuffs that might carry the virus.

In Taiwan, which has a large swine industry, they have recently announced a `maximum penalty' for anyone caught smuggling raw pork products into the country.

Ten days ago in South Korea Detects ASF Gene In Chinese Food Products: Additional Testing Underway, we learned of the discovery of the ASF gene (via preliminary PCR testing) in food products brought into that country by a traveler returning from China last  month.

Yesterday South Korea's MAFRA updated that report, and announced a second detection at Jeju Airport.  Although Korean-to-English translation software loses a little in the translation, there's little doubt how seriously the South Koreans are taking this threat.
