Egyptian woman dies from bird flu: MENA

CAIRO (Reuters) - An Egyptian woman died from bird flu on Friday after six days in hospital, the state news agency MENA said.

Warda Eid Ahmed, 27, from Beni Suef province, had been transferred to hospital in Cairo on January 13 with pneumonia.

Health Ministry spokesman Abdel Rahim Shahin said she was the 11th person in Egypt to die from bird flu out of 19 cases in humans since February last year. The other eight have recovered.

Not mentioned in this article, or the mainstream press, is the fact that arabic newspapers have carried reports of other suspected H5N1 patients currently hospitalized in Egypt.

Theresa42 at CE, one of the hardest working flu newshounds on the net, has been keeping track of these reports, and maintains a list of suspected cases. A hat tip goes to her for her diligence and dedication. She reports the following suspect cases.

Jan 16: 2 sus cases in Qina
Jan 17: 4 sus cases in Suhaj
Jan 18: 3 sus cases in Ismailiya and Suhaj
Jan 19: 8 sus cases in Al Gharbiyah, Al Fayyoum and Al Qalyubiyah

It remains to be seen how many of these suspect cases actually turn out to be the H5N1 virus. Some will likely turn out to be something else.

But equally obvious is the fact that the virus continues, unabated, in Egypt, and the patient mortality rate there among reported cases in the past few months has been 100%.
