Korean Press Release On Joint Mission With WHO

After several days of media speculation, on Friday we saw the World Health Organization announce they had been invited to Korea to assist in the investigation into their MERS outbreak in WHO Statement On Joint Mission To Korea.


Today the Korean government issued the following statement outlining the scope of the 5-day joint mission.






  • Mr. Moon Hyungpyo, Minister of Health and Welfare, Republic of Korea, announced that the Korea - WHO Joint Mission will be conducted for 5 days, from 9 to 13 June 2015.
  • The joint mission team consists of 16 experts – 8 from WHO and 8 from the Republic of Korea WHO and Korea (see Annex 1). It will be co-led by Dr. Jong-Koo Lee, Director of JW LEE Center for Global Medicine, Seoul National University College of Medicine, and Dr. Keiji Fukuda, Assistant Director-General for Health Security, WHO. A temporary office for the joint mission will be set up in the Korea Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (KCDC).
  • The joint mission will begin with a meeting with Minister Moon Hyungpyo on 9 June 2015. Its planned activities will include: discussing epidemiological investigations into the confirmed cases and infection control, visiting the hospitals that had confirmed cases or are keeping isolated patients, and analysing the characteristics of the MERS-CoV in Korea in cooperation with KCDC.

  • The mission will end with its official reporting to the Korean Minister of Health and Welfare followed by a press conference on 13 June(Sat).
