Vietnam - which only reported their first outbreak 8 months ago - has lost at least 5 million pigs (see FAO ASF update).The entry of this livestock disease to Australia, Japan, Taiwan, Canada, or the United States could be equally devastating. Not surprisingly, the USDA recently released a 28-page ASF response plan, in the event the virus turns up on American soil.
Food insecurity - whether due to disease, floods, droughts, or other causes - can bring on severe economic, and societal challenges. In extreme cases, it can even destabilize regions (see Iran: Bird Flu, Food Insecurity & Civil Unrest).All of which makes these types of threats very much worth our attention.
