Jakarta Post: Forced Culling Begins Tomorrow

# 384

It's a relatively short article, and it showed up late in the day, but the Jakarta Post online website is now carrying the following in the general news section:

RI to fight bird flu through forced culling of chickens in capital

JAKARTA (AP): Indonesia will begin the compulsory slaughter of thousands of backyard chickens in its teeming capital Thursday, part of a high-profile campaign to stamp out bird flu in the world's hardest hit nation.

Authorities, who gave residents weeks to voluntarily get rid of their birds, will go door to door in some neighborhoods to make sure the order was carried out.

"I will show no tolerance," Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso said after meeting with mayors, health and husbandry officials.

"Chickens found running loose will be immediately be killed, the sick ones thrown into a fire and the healthy ones given to owners to be fried and eaten."
