JAKARTA: An Indonesian woman who tested positive in preliminary tests for human bird flu died on Sunday, a health ministry official said.

Indonesia requires that the results of a second test are positive before confirming any human bird flu fatality.

The latest death, if confirmed, would push the country's human bird flu death toll to 76, the world's highest.

The woman, 26, who was four months pregnant with her second child, died at a hospital in Medan, North Sumatra, early on Sunday, the official said.

It was not immediately clear whether the victim had been in close contact with infected poultry, the main channel of human bird flu infections in Indonesia.

She began to show symptoms of bird flu infection on May 2 and was treated first at home, then moved to two different hospitals before she died.
