China Reports Bird Flu In Poultry

# 1442

Given the size and population of the country, we hear of relatively few outbreaks of H5N1 in China.  The number of human cases reported there is also surprisingly low.

Whether this is due to astonishing luck, poor surveillance, or selective reporting is unknown.

In any event, today we do have a report out of China.

BEIJING -- Bird flu infection took place in Turpan City in northwestern China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on December 29 and resulted in 4,850 poultry deaths.

The case was confirmed by a State laboratory on January 3 to be a species of H5N1 virus.

The Ministry of Agriculture and local governments had culled 29,383 fowls, sources said Friday.
