Crof on Crofsblog has a statement from the OIE addressing the recent uproar over remarks attributed to their director, Bernard Vallat, regarding the H5N1 virus.
In A statement from OIE that agency insists that their Director's remarks were misrepresented.
While falling somewhat short of denying that their Director said - ''The risk [of a pandemic] was overestimated.'' Concern a few years ago about a possibly imminent pandemic represented ''just nonscientific supposition'' - at least they are backing away from those statements.
Now . . . will this clarification get the same amount of play in the press as the original statement?
I hope so, but I have my doubts.
But even if it does, considerable damage has been done to the pandemic preparedness movement.
After all, you can't unring a bell.
