Vietnam: Volunteers Get 2nd Dose In Human Vaccine Trial

# 2002

Vietnam is one of many nations working to develop their own human bird flu vaccine.  Their technique, which relies on monkey kidney cells to create the vaccine, has sparked some concerns over safety, but Vietnamese officials appear confident in this process.

The Military Medical Academy in northern Ha Tay Province Saturday gave a second round of shots of a H5N1 vaccine to 30 volunteers.

The volunteers were injected with a one millimeter dose as part of the second human trial of the vaccine, which began on April 19.

Dr. Doan Huy Hau, head of the academy’s epidemiology unit, said after 28 days, if the vaccine showed efficacy, the institute’s researchers will suggest the Ministry of Health continue the trial with more volunteers.

The trial vaccine, produced by the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology’s Company for Vaccine and Biological Production No.1, is expected to be marketed next year.

The drug is expected to cost about VND30,000 (US$1.88) per injection.
