Reuters is reporting that the test results on some of the birds that died in Malda, West Bengal over the past week have come back positive for the H5N1 virus. Media reports indicate as many as 5,000 birds may have died in the city over the past 7 days.
Malda, and much of the state of West Bengal, was embroiled in a prolonged battle with the H5N1 virus during the first four months of 2008. West Bengal received heavy criticism during the last crisis due to their reported slowness to take action against the virus.
