Of the eight cases of human H5N1 infection reported by China in January, five have proved fatal.   One of the lucky ones was a 29-year-old man from Guizhou Province.

He reportedly fell ill on January 15th, and was in critical condition for awhile. On January 27th we learned his condition had stabilized, and a picture of him appeared in the Chinese press.

A MAN confirmed infected with bird flu disease last month in Guizhou Province is now recovering.

The 29-year-old man, surnamed Zhou, was confirmed infected with H5N1 strain of bird flu on January 25. He's now out of danger and all the clinical symptoms have been cleared, according to a report by Xinhua news agency today.

Zhou had once come into close contact with a live duck before infection.

The hospital organized 30 experts for the disease treatment and control.

"The patient finally came out of danger and is no longer contagious. He is now in recovery stage and under observation," said Sun Zhaolin, president of the provincial hospital.

China has reported five human deaths from the H5N1 virus so far this year and Zhou is the first to show symptoms of recovery.
