Vietnam Reports Bird Flu Fatality

After 18 days of intensive care treatment, 23-year-old Ly Tai Mui lost her battle against the H5N1 virus on Saturday Afternoon.  From the earliest news accounts, we were aware she was in critical condition. 

 

She becomes Vietnam's 53rd official bird flu fatality.

 

According to this report, her care cost 20 million VND (Vietnamese Dong) per day.   That's about $1140 US.

Bird flu patient dies in Quang Ninh

VietNamNet Bridge – A 23 year old woman in the northern province of Quang Ninh was reported dead at 2.30 pm on Feb.21 after testing positive to bird flu virus of H5N1 strain.

Ly Tai Mui, from the Dao ethnic minority group, was hospitalized to the Quang Ninh provincial hospital on Feb. 3 with symptoms of high fever, blood pressure extremely down and severe acute respiratory syndrome.

 

 


She was tested positive to the deadly influenza, type A H5N1 virus.


Mui caught high fever and felt hard to breathe on January 28. She was brought to the medical centre in Dam Ha district on January 31 and moved to the Tien Yen hospital on Feb. 2.

 


She died after 18 days of medical treatments under the thorough care and close supervision round the clock by three shifts of provincial doctors and experts from the National Tropical Disease Medical Institute and the Bach Mai Hospital.

 

 

Her treatments, including the most modern breathing apparatus, blood screening and blood transmission all the time and dialysis, cost an estimated 20 million VND a day, according to the provincial hospital.
