2009 Bird Flu Reports

Green Poultry- Red Human

Vietnam is confirming a new human case of H5N1 infection this morning, their first  of 2009.  The case involves a 23 year-old man from Quang Ninh Province (highlighted in red on the map).

Quang Ninh is not currently listed as one of the provinces seeing bird flu outbreaks in poultry.

It does, however, border the Chinese province of Guangxi, which reported a human fatality in January, not far from the Vietnamese border.

Quang Ninh Province was also frequently mentioned as a location of poultry infections during the outbreaks in the summer of 2007 and the winter of 2008.

Contrary to the report below, the 8 year old girl Reuters is referring to fell ill in December, and is therefore not counted in the 2009 totals.

HANOI - A 23-YEAR-OLD man has tested positive for the deadly H5N1 virus in northern Vietnam, a state-run newspaper reported on Saturday.

The online Lao Dong newspaper (www.laodong.com.vn) quoted health officials as saying the man from Dam Ha district in the northern province of Quang Ninh, about 150 km from Hanoi had fallen ill and tests showed he carried the bird flu virus.

The report quoted doctors as saying the man had high fever and severe respiratory problem.

Prior to this case, Vietnam has this year confirmed one case of human infection in the northern province of Thanh Hoa, involving an 8-year-old girl who fell sick after eating duck and chicken raised on her family's farm. She has recovered.
