WHO Update On Egyptian Case

# 2752

Although the main WHO (World Health Organization) Alert & Response page hasn't been updated as of this writing, the WHO's Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean  (EMRO) has an update on the latest Egyptian case on their front page.

The good news, absent from yesterday's report, is that the child is in good/stable condition.

New human case of avian influenza
Case number 54

4 February 2009

The Ministry of Health and Population of Egypt reported to WHO a new confirmed human case of avian influenza on the 4th of February 2009 at 6:48 pm.

The case is a 2-year-old male from Suez Governorate, Ganain District.

His symptoms began on the 2nd of February 2009 and was admitted to Suez Fever Hospital on the 3rd where Tamiflu started. A throat swab as well as blood samples were taken and confirmed by the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratory on February 4. Investigations into the source of his infection indicate a recent history of contact with dead poultry.

The child remains in a stable and good health condition. This brings up the total number of confirmed human cases of avian influenza in Egypt to 54 with 23 deaths.
