Indonesia: Bekasi Residents Under Observation

On February 28th, an 8 year-old boy named Andri died of suspected H5N1 bird flu after receiving treatment at two different hospitals.  Yesterday we learned that three Healthcare workers who treated Andri were under observation, although none reportedly were experiencing symptoms of influenza.

 

Today, the number of people under observation has been expanded, according to accounts published in the Pikiran Rakyat

 

As many as 33 people who had close contact with Andri will be watched for 17 days. There is no indication at this time that any are showing symptoms of illness.

Bird Flu Eradication Team watches 33 residents.

Bekasi – Total 33 residents of Kampung Sukamantri, Desa Suka Raya, Kecamatan Karang Bahagia, Bekasi West Java are observed by Bird Flu Eradication team of Kabupaten Bekasi. These people are known to have close (less than 1 meter distance) contact. From 33 observed residents, most of them are victim’s family and relatives and also health care workers. From victim’s family that under observation are Ilyas (43); Mimin Setiawati (36); Ismawati (4) and Nanang. Health care workers, as Kartika Medika clinic’s owner, Ipah Latifza and Tarmizi are also observed.

 

“Monitoring will be done during 17 days or two times incubation period since Ardiansyah casualty. The purpose is to prevent transmission of avian influenza H5N1 virus from bird to human or human to human”, says Heru Hermawan, team member of Bird Flu Eradication Kabupaten Bekasi. During 2009 bird flu spreading in poultries reported on two areas in Bekasi, they are Kecamatan Sukatani and Kecamatan Setu.
