CDC Confirms Swine Flu Outbreak In NYC

# 3050

Mayor Bloomberg of New York City announced a short while ago that a number of students from the St. Francis Preparatory School in the borough of Queens have tested positive for the Swine Flu virus.

Preliminary testing has suggested that they were likely infected, and so this comes as no great surprise.

The good news is that all known cases in New York City have only reported mild symptoms.

Family members of some of these students are falling ill, indicating continued human-to-human spread of the virus.

Mayor Bloomberg stressed that anyone who is only mildly ill should NOT go to the hospital.  People with severe symptoms should seek medical care.

They also advise:

If you are ill, stay home.  Do not go to work or to school.  Wash your hands, cover your coughs, and don’t spread the virus to others.

Public Health officials have no evidence of any clusters beyond the St. Francis School, and have no plans to shut down the schools (other than St. Francis) tomorrow.

That status could change.  Public Health officials will be re-evaluating the situation on a daily basis.

While only 8 cases have been confirmed, the expectation is that many of the other symptomatic children will test positive.
