Flu Wiki: Putting The Pandemic On The Map

# 3360

We’ve got some incredibly talented and dedicated flubies doing tons of volunteer work on the flu forums.

There are scores of newshounds who spend hours each day seeking out foreign language press accounts of disease outbreaks, translating them into English, and then posting them on the flu forums with often very astute analysis.

I’ve highlighted their efforts a number of times, and try to hat tip them whenever I use one of their links, but perhaps the best introduction to how they work can be found in an essay entitled:

Newshounds: They Cover The Pandemic Front.

My sidebar will lead you to a half dozen different flu forums, and each has its strengths and weaknesses.  Some are more `social’ or focus on preparedness, while other strive for a more `studious’  and scientific atmosphere.

The Flu Wiki, which is one of the oldest and most respected of the flu forums, begins a new news thread every day.  You’ll find it at, or near, the top of their front page.

In it you’ll find not only news, but analysis, and a number of terrific maps created, and updated by, Wikians such as Okieman and Nika.

They aren’t alone, of course.   There are creative people working on all of the flu forums.

And they draw from data collected by others, as well.  But this is another fine example of the cooperative work being done behind the scenes in Flublogia.

Some screenshots of their efforts below.
