New York City’s Health Department quietly, and without fanfare, updated their swine flu webpage late Friday afternoon and increased the number of deaths related to the virus by 7, to 30.

A total of 748 people have been hospitalized.

Since we don’t have a good feel for how many people have been infected in the New York City area (testing is only being done on those most severely affected), it is impossible to arrive at any reasonable estimate of the CFR (Case Fatality Ratio) or the percent of those infected that are hospitalized.

If there have been 10,000 infections in New York City, then these numbers would be pretty high.  If that number is closer to 100,000 infections, then these numbers are relatively low.

What we can say, without equivocation, is that seeing hundreds of influenza related hospitalizations and dozens of deaths in JUNE is pretty unusual.
