Where In The World Is Bird Flu?

# 4959

Although we tend to think primarily of Egypt and Indonesia (and to a lesser extent Vietnam and China) as hotspots for avian flu - the truth is, sporadic outbreaks continue to occur around the world.

Winter and spring are the big seasons for H5N1, so the last six months have been understandably pretty quiet.  Still, over that time span 13 Countries (or regions) have reported H5N1 in humans, poultry, or wild birds.

Since incident reports are quickly relegated to yesterday’s news, it is easy to lose track.

So it is nice to have the following chart which comes from Hong Kong’s Centre For Health Protection’s weekly avian influenza report.

As I reported last month, while not making many headlines, according to the FAO the number of reports of HPAI H5N1 between January and June of this year have already surpassed the total reported in all of 2009.

FAO Situation Update # 69

Both serve as a helpful reminder that while news coverage of the virus may not be robust, avian influenza remains in play in many places around the world.
