Japan: 12th Bird Flu Outbreak Reported

Reports of highly pathogenic H5N1 infected poultry continue to emerge from Japan, now with 12 individual outbreaks across 5 prefectures.

 

Hardest hit has been Miyazaki Prefecture, with a total of 8 farms infected.

Bird flu virus detected at Miyazaki poultry farm

Dead chickens found at a poultry farm in Miyazaki Prefecture, southwestern Japan, have tested positive for bird flu.

 

This is the 12th outbreak of avian influenza at poultry farms in the country this winter, and the 8th in the prefecture.

 

On Thursday and Friday, 94 chickens were found dead at a farm in Takachiho town. Some of them tested positive for bird flu in preliminary tests, and genetic analysis confirmed the H5 strain in 5 birds.
