After their website had been offline for much of yesterday, overnight the Saudi MOH posted their June 6th MERS update, which indicates 4 new MERS cases - all from Al Jawf - and all listed as asymptomatic and in home isolation.
One is listed as a healthcare worker (corrected).
MERS reports from Al Jawf have not been common, but you may recall that on Monday of this week we saw:
- In Al Jawf: A 42-year old male suffering from renal stones. He developed respiratory symptoms on May 20,2014. He was admitted to a government hospital on May 30 2014. He passed away on Sunday, 1st June 2014. May Allah rest his soul.
Followed on Wednesday by another case – that of a 29 year old HCW, who is symptomatic and isolated in the hospital. While no routes of exposure are listed – one might fairly assume she was exposed to the first case.
Now we learn of four more cases – source or routes of exposure unknown – bringing to 6 the number of cases reported from Al Jawf this week.
This is becoming a very familiar scenario.
Despite two years of experience of dealing with MERS, and repeated warnings on the importance of vigilance and strict infection control procedures, all it seems to take is a single introduction of a community acquired case (route of infection unknown) into a hospital environment to start another chain of infection.
