Canada’s two-week long HPAI H5N2 bird flu outbreak continues with a 10th barn found affected, this time on a poultry farm in Langley – part of the Greater Vancouver Regional District – roughly 24 km west of the Abbottsford outbreaks. These premises hold an additional 53,000 birds which will be destroyed.
The CFIA has updated their Infected Premises Chart to include this latest outbreak.
This is the fourth outbreak of avian flu to hit the Fraser Valley region over the past decade and the largest since the massive outbreak of HPAI H7N3 in 2004 which resulted in the culling of 17 million birds. In 2005 and again in 2009 the region was struck by a LPAI H5N2, but this current outbreak is their first highly pathogenic H5N2 outbreak.
