Until now South Dakota’s bird flu woes have been limited to relatively small commercial turkey farms, but today it was announced by the South Dakota Animal Industry Board that a large layer farm in Moody County has now been affected.  Reportedly, this particular facility has 1.3 million chickens.

Tests are pending to determine the exact strain, but it is likely H5N2 (or possibility H5N8).

This is the ninth outbreak recorded in South Dakota since March 30th, which have occurred in 9 separate counties, all on the eastern half of the state.  Two outbreaks in Turkey farms, discovered on May 9th, were reported yesterday.
