USGS Upgrades NZ Quake To M7.8

#11,901

As we often see following a big quake report, after additional seismograph readings come in and are analyzed, the initial intensity readings (and other parameters) are subject to adjustment.

While additional tweaking is possible, the USGS has now upgraded today's NZ quake to M7.8., but has set the depth to 23km, more than twice as deep as originally reported.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center remains in condition green, but is still evaluating data.  Meanwhile, New Zealand's Civil Defense has issued a local tsunami warning for the east coast of New Zealand.

The aftershocks, some very strong, are continuing.
