France: MOA Announces 14 Additional HPAI H5N8 Outbreaks

Meanwhile, in the four days since our last update, the French MOA has announced 14 new outbreaks of HPAI on Farms, with 12 of those in Gers and 2 in Landes.  

Last week, with outbreaks still rising, France announced a prophylactic cull of all ducks and geese in three departments  (Gers, Landes, and Haute-Pyrenees), rather than waiting to address individual outbreaks.

Situation on January 9, 2017: 109 H5N8 outbreaks in farms and 5 cases in wildlife confirmed and communicated.

  • Landes: 19 homes
  • Tarn: 8 homes
  • Gers: 63 homes
  • Lot-et-Garonne: 7 homes
  • Hautes-Pyrénées: 5 homes
  • Pyrénées-Atlantiques: 3 homes
  • Aveyron: 2 homes
  • Deux-Sèvres: 2 homes

List of outbreaks in wildlife

  • Pas-de-Calais: 1 home
  • Haute-Savoie: 2 homes
  • Tarn: 1 home
  • Channel: 1 home
Internationally

Since the latter situation December 26 on, 57 new outbreaks of HPAI H5N8 subtype were reported in Europe (European Union plus Switzerland):

- in France (23 breeding foci)
- Poland (10 outbreaks in livestock)
- Germany (breeding 6 homes)
- and Hungary (5 households with a wild).

The virus has also been detected recently in Slovakia (in Bratislava galliformes breeding) and Ireland (in Wexford County in a widgeon).

The total number of outbreaks and cases reported continues to increase and is now 724 (compared to 667 last week) including 351 in wild birds (57 species affected), 364 and 9 in farms of captive birds (Tables 1 & 2).
