FAO: Portugal Detects H5N8 In Grey Heron
#12,185
While it seems as if HPAI H5N8 is running out of new European countries to invade, there remain a few hold outs. Until today, Portugal was one of them, but according to a new FAO Report the virus has now been detected in a dead Grey Heron along that country's southern coast.
This detection follows the discovery - three weeks ago - of the virus in wild birds in northern Spain (see OIE Report), and puts the virus ever closer to the north African nations of Morocco and Algeria. While Algeria was hit with a couple of outbreaks of H7N1 last fall, neither has seen this new H5N8 virus.
