In recent weeks the number of avian flu outbreaks across much of Europe has slowly declined, likely due to warmer weather and the annual spring migration of birds back to their summer roosting areas in Russia, China, and the arctic.
One of the things we are watching for is an increase in the number of outbreaks along those migratory routes to the north and east.
Today Russia's Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (Rosselkhoznadzor) is reporting on an outbreak at a poultry production facility in Rostov. You may recall we saw an outbreak at the end of December in this same region.
Other than identifying the virus as an avian Influenza A, we have no word yet on the subtype, although HPAI H5 is most likely. I expect we'll see an OIE Notification today or tomorrow, which should provide more details.
Two government reports, the first released late yesterday, and the second earlier today.
