Russia, which reported considerable H5N8 activity back in April & May (see map above), had gone quiet the past couple of months, although we continued to see reports of contaminated poultry products showing up in retail shops around the country (see July 27th's Rosselkhoznadzor Finds More HPAI Contaminated Meat In Retail Stores).
Today Russia has notified the OIE of a new HPAI H5N8 outbreak in a backyard flock in Kurovskoye in Moskovskaya (Moscow) Oblast, a small town (pop 22K) about 90 km SE of the Russian capital.
While hardly rife, we continue to see sporadic H5N8 reports from a number of regions of Europe (Italy, Belgium, France, UK, etc.) - and now Russia - that reminds us the virus hasn't entirely vanished this summer.
Some other recent reports from the Northern Hemipshere include:
Italy: IZSV Confirms 4 More H5N8 Outbreaks In Poultry
ESA Epidemiological Update: HPAI H5 Clade 2.3.4.4 Viruses In Europe
Belgium Reports Another Outbreak of HPAI H5N8
