China MOA: 3nd ASF Outbreak In Anshan City, Liaoning Province

#13,594

Liaoning  - which was the first Chinese province to report African Swine Fever (see China MOA: 1st Reported Outbreak Of African Swine Fever (ASF) in early August - continues to be China's hot spot for outbreaks.
Roughly half of the 3 dozen+ outbreaks recorded over the past 9 weeks have come from Liaoning.
The past week has been no exception, with outbreaks in Yingkou, Dalian, and Anshan City.  Today, China's MOA announced the third outbreak this week from Liaoning's 3rd largest Prefecture-Level city.

The Information Office of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs was released on October 14th, and the Anshan City of Liaoning Province once again detected the epidemic situation of pigs in Africa.

On October 14, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs received a report from the China Animal Disease Prevention and Control Center. The samples submitted by the Liaoning Provincial Center for Animal Disease Control and Prevention were diagnosed as African swine fever by the China Center for Animal Health and Epidemiology (National Institute of Animal Diseases and Diseases). . The positive samples were from a farmer in Sanglin Town, Tai'an County, Anshan City. The farmer had 180 pigs, 14 sicknesses and 14 deaths.

Immediately after the outbreak, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs sent a steering group to the local area. The local government has started the emergency response mechanism as required, and adopted measures such as blockade, culling, harmless treatment, disinfection, etc., to treat all the sick and culled pigs harmlessly. At the same time, all pigs and susceptible animals are prohibited from entering or leaving the blockade area, and all pig products are prohibited from flowing out of the blockade. At present, the above epidemic has been effectively disposed of.

Curiously, 7 provinces which reported multiple outbreaks in August and September, have yet to report outbreaks in October.
While ASF doesn't pose a health risk to humans, it is devastating for pig producers - and with no vaccine available - the only way to control the disease  is to cull all of the pigs that may have been exposed.
