While MERS reports from Saudi Arabia have been fairly subdued of late, over the past 3 days KSA's MOH has announced 3 new cases, only one of which has reported camel contact.
As we discussed yesterday in mBio: High Prevalence of MERS-CoV Infection in Camel Workers in Saudi Arabia, the ongoing appearance of MERS cases in the community without a known risk exposure has many researchers looking at the possibility that mildly infected or asymptomatic carriers may be spreading the virus.
Over the past few months we've also looked at reports of Atypical Presentation Of MERS-CoV, and apparent deficits in the Saudi's Visual Triage for the Screening of MERS-CoV Patients, both of which suggest some (perhaps, many) cases go unidentified.
Cases continue to be overwhelmingly male, and mostly over the age of 50. The latest list of cases from the MOH reads:
