ASF Outbreak In Guizhou, Taiwan Seizes 6th Positive Sample

 #13,750

As new outbreaks of African Swine Fever continue to pop up across much of Eastern China, other Asian countries are working frantically to prevent the virus from being imported into their pig population.
Last Tuesday, in Taiwan Opens ASF Center, Raises Fines To Prevent Entry Of Disease, we looked at the new hefty fines that will be levied against anyone attempting to bring food products illegally into Taiwan.
While China's neighbors have yet to report any outbreaks in pigs, over the past several months we've seen multiple reports of the interdiction of ASF contaminated food illegally brought into South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan.

A few examples include:
Japan MAFF: ASF Virus Detected In Luggage At Hokkaido Airport

South Korea Detects ASF Gene In Chinese Food Products: Additional Testing Underway

Travelers smuggling raw pork from China to face maximum penalty
Today Taiwan's BAPHIQ announces their 6th interdiction of an ASF positive food sample by Customs officials - this time originating from Macao - an area not officially recognized as impacted by the virus.
The Customs and Excise Department and the Customs and Excise Department continue to strengthen border passenger inspections and detect the 6th African swine fever virus gene in the case of passengers carrying illegal pork products.

The Animal and Plant Epidemic and Quarantine Bureau of the Agriculture Committee of the Executive Yuan said today (20) that in order to prevent the invasion of African swine fever, the Anti-inspection Bureau has vacated the airport from the airport and port passengers in August this year, and the airport (port) agricultural products abandoned boxes of Chinese mainland pork products. Sampling and sending it to the Animal Health Laboratory of the Council of Agriculture (the Animal Husbandry) to detect African swine fever virus.

The Animal Husbandry Institute once again tested one case (pork sausage from Macau, China) for the African swine fever virus gene, which is the sixth case since the detection of positive cases (October 31, November 13, November 30) In 1 case and 2 cases on December 12, the meat was sampled and destroyed. The sample was sent to the Animal Husbandry Institute on December 17, and was confirmed by the Animal Husbandry Institute.
The sequence of the gene fragment was 100% similar to the gene fragment of the African swine fever virus strain in mainland China, indicating that the passenger carried pork from mainland China. When products return to China, the risk of spreading African swine fever is extremely high.

In order to solve the safe disposal of unidentified meat from the public, the Anti-inspection Bureau issued a news on December 13th, asking the public to help the disposal of meat of unknown origin, please send it to the various branches of the Anti-inspection Bureau during working hours. The quarantine station, the colleague of the bureau will collect the packaging and dispose of it in a unified manner to avoid inadvertently entering the kitchen chain and increase the risk of spread of the disease.
According to statistics, at 13:00 on December 20, the branches of the Anti-inspection Bureau received a total of 52 pieces of 31.69 kilograms of unidentified meat from the public, mostly from mainland China, including ham, red sausage, dried meat and floss. According to the Anti-Inspection Bureau, these meat products have been incinerated after high temperature and high pressure sterilization, and there is no risk of transmission of disease.

The Anti-Inspection Bureau said that the number of cases involving passengers carrying illegal meats entering the country was increased. After the increase of the quota on December 18, the number of cases seized by various airports and ports (including the small three links) was 9 on the 18th. 2 yuan for 200,000 yuan, 6 yuan for 30,000 yuan, 1 yuan for 10,000 yuan, 5 for 19th (for a fine of 200,000 yuan, 4 yuan for 30,000 yuan), today (20) from 0:00 to 4:00 A total of 6 pieces (one piece of 200,000 yuan, 4 yuan of 30,000 yuan, 1 piece of 10,000 yuan).
The Anti-inspection Bureau once again reminded the public that they should not carry meat when they enter the country. They should not send foreign meat products to Taiwan for online purchase. Offenders will be severely punished. The AFB finally called on the public to report to the bureau if there is any smuggling of animal or animal products. The free report line is 0800-039131. If the report is true, the maximum amount can be 5 million yuan.

Meanwhile, the beat goes on in China, with Guizhou reporting their 4th outbreak.
