Saudi MOH Announces 2 New MERS Cases

Saudi MERS Cases 2019 (n=64)

#13,870

A bit later than usual today the Saudi MOH has updated their Epi Week 7 MERS list adding their 63rd & 64th cases of the year, bringing this week's total to 24, and the total thus far for the month of February to 50.

The first case - once again from Wadi Aldwasir - is a 65 y.o. male classified as a Primary case with recent camel contact.

The second case hails from Umluj City, in Northwestern Saudi Arabia, roughly 300 miles north and west of Mecca.  This case is a 78 y.o. male, again classified as a Primary case with recent camel contact.

Today's case from Wadi Aldwasir is the 40th reported in that town since January 29th.  In addition to a handful of  primary cases - some with camel contact, some without - there appears to have been at least 3 clusters in this outbreak.
  • 6 cases have been listed as secondary, household contacts
  • 2 cases have been listed as secondary, community-acquired
  • 23 cases have been listed as secondary, healthcare-acquired.
While there are some hopeful signs that the outbreak in Wadi Aldwasir may be slowing, we've now seen more cases in the first 7 week of 2019 than were reported by KSA in the last 7 months of 2018.
