Vietnam Reports First (3) Outbreaks Of African Swine Fever

#13,874

Five days ago Taiwan's BAPHIQ (Bureau of Animal Plant Health Inspection & Quarantine) announced the detection of ASF Positive Pork Products Brought In By Passengers From Vietnam, which immediately led to concerns that the virulent pig disease had spread out of China to a neighboring country.
This was a scenario envisioned by the FAO more than 6 months ago (see FAO: African swine fever (ASF) threatens to spread from China to other Asian countries), and today we have confirmation of 3 Vietnamese farms in two provinces (Thái Bình and Hưng Yên) have been confirmed infected.
Reuters has a very brief report (see below), and following that we have more details from the Vietnamese media.  As of this writing, no formal announcement appears on the MARD (Vietnam's Agriculture Ministry) website.

While ASF doesn't pose a threat to human health, it can be devastating to pig production. Given the dismal progress in containing the ASF virus in Eastern Europe, Russia, and most recently China (see DEFRA map below), the prospects for successfully halting this virus remain slim.
