Taiwan: Another ASF Positive Pig Washes Ashore, More Airport Interdictions

#13,932

While China has only reported two African Swine Fever outbreaks in the month of March, Taiwan continues to interdict infected pork products brought into the country by travelers from the mainland, and today announced another ASF positive pig has floated onto one of their beaches.
Although Taiwan sits between 60 and 90 miles off the Chinese mainland, the Republic of China exercises political control over several groups of (many uninhabited) islands (Kinmen, Wuqiu & Matsu) that lie much closer to the mainland (see map above).
Last December and January we saw several reports of dead, ASF positive pigs (see ASF: When Pigs Float) turning up on the beaches of some of Taiwan's islands, presumably dumped into rivers onto the mainland.
And for the past couple of months we've been following Chinese social media and the dissident press reports and pictures of dead pigs `死猪' being dumped or destroyed, but verification of thier ASF status is all but impossible.
Today Taiwan's BAPHIQ (Bureau of Animal Plant Health Inspection & Quarantine) announced the 32nd ASF-positive food sample confiscated at their airport, and the latest floating pig report.
China's mainland drifting Golden Gate pigs and intercepting pork products, detecting African swine fever virus nucleic acid positive

The Central Hunger Disaster Response Center (Strain Center) of Africa has said that on the 12th, on the southwestern side of Liyu Township (Xiaojinmen) in Jinmen County, a dead pig that drifted ashore was found, passing through the Jinmen County Animal and Plant Epidemic Prevention Institute.

Sampling, sent to the Animal Husbandry Health Laboratory of the Council of Agriculture (the Animal Husbandry) to test, the detection of African swine fever virus nucleic acid positive today, the gene fragment and mainland China isolate virus strain similarity of 100%, because the discovery location is only about from mainland China Xiamen 6 kilometers, very close to the mouth of the Jiulong River, the Jinmen County government in addition to disinfecting personnel, vehicles and equipment, also monitoring 8 pig farms in Liyu Township, no abnormalities have been found. Today, a case of pork porcine virus gene in mainland China was detected, with a total of 32 cases.

According to the Strain Center, the Jinmen County Animal and Plant Epidemic Prevention Institute received a notification from the Liyu Township Public Office on the 12th. A dead pig was found while performing a clean beach activity at the seaside of Shaxibao in Lianyu Township. The patrol team immediately rushed to the scene with the Jinmen shore patrol team. Understand that after collecting the relevant samples, the pigs will be burned and buried on the spot, and the samples will be sent to the animal husbandry for inspection. The relevant samples were detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and the results of the detection of African swine fever virus nucleic acid were positive.

The gene fragment sequence was 100% similar to the gene fragment of the Chinese swine fever virus strain in mainland China. The strain center added that the site was completely disinfected by the Jinmen County Animal and Plant Epidemic Prevention Institute. There is no pig farm within 3 km radius of the area.

The Strain Center pointed out that according to the return of the Jinmen County Animal and Plant Epidemic Prevention Institute, there was no abnormal death in the pigs in the county. The veterinarians of the public offices continued to pay close attention to the dynamics of the farms within the jurisdiction. Due to the geographical location of Jinmen County is very close to the Fujian Province of China and Xiamen City, and close to the mouth of the sea, occasionally found dead pigs with garbage drifting to the coast of Kinmen County.

In response to this case, the Jinmen County Government has implemented disinfection measures for the personnel, vehicles and equipment that are in contact with the pig. Since there is no pig farm within 3 km of the detection location, in order to ensure safety, the township has been The pig farm conducted a comprehensive visit and found no abnormal situation. The samples will be monitored and monitored. In order to ensure industrial safety, the Jinmen County Government will also announce the provisions of Article 28 of the Animal Infectious Diseases Prevention and Control Regulations to suspend the pigs and products of Liyu Township. Shipped to Kinmen Island, the pigs in the township pig farms can only be deactivated if they have completed the African swine fever test and are negative.

The Strain Center also stressed that in order to prevent the invasion of African swine fever and continue monitoring at the border, today, a case of Chinese pork products with African swine fever virus gene was detected in 32 cases, a total of 32 cases. On the 7th of March, the Kaohsiung Branch of the Kaohsiung Xiaogang Airport Quarantine Station sampled the dried pork (produced by Linyi, Shandong) from the Fudong Airlines passengers in Fuzhou, China. The sample was confirmed by the Institute of Animal Husbandry, and the gene fragment sequence was 100% similar to the gene fragment of the African swine fever virus strain in mainland China, indicating that the passengers carrying pork products from mainland China returned to China and the risk of spreading African swine fever was extremely high.

Since the outbreak of the African outbreak in mainland China, the proportion of African piglets detected by meat has increased with the increase of the epidemic. According to the month, there were 1 case in October 2007 (the rate of positive detection was 0.6%) and 2 cases in November (1.1%). ), 4 cases (2.2%) in December, 11 cases (6.2%) in January, 11 cases (8.0%) in February, and 3 cases (7.5%) in March. The detection rate was still high. The Strain Center appeals to the public to travel abroad without carrying animal and plant products, especially meat, and not to buy foreign meat products for delivery to Taiwan. Offenders will be severely punished.

In addition to the inspection and counseling progress of the kitchen waste pig farm, the Response Center stated that the Agriculture Committee had requested 17 county and city governments on February 15, 2008 to report that the food waste was not used for re-use and that the feed was not diverted. The 541 kitchen waste pig farms handled the joint audit, and the previous work was completed on March 13. Statistics on the progress of the latest report on the reform of the kitchen and pig farms in each county and city. The number of food waste recycling inspections in the country has reached 747, and 966 have been converted to feed. As for the lack of food waste recycling inspection permits, The pig farms that have not been converted to feed have dropped significantly to 268, of which 124 are currently not raising pigs. The remaining 144 pig farms will continue to invite local governments to strengthen counselling and inspections, prompting farmers to switch to feed as soon as possible. Use the check, stop, or exit.
