Saudi MOH: Epi Week 15 - 2 More Secondary MERS Cases in Al Khafji

#13,990

Although it hasn't appeared yet on KSA's list of MERS Epi Week reports - which is where many people naturally check for updates - sometime late yesterday afternoon the Saudi MOH posted an Epi Week 15 update, bringing the number of recent cases in Al Kahfji to 9.
Ten days ago the Saudis announced a single, primary (with camel contact) MERS case (M,75) in Al Khafji, very near the Saudi border with Kuwait.
Two days later (Epi Week 14) they announced a 25-year-old male as a secondary case, followed on April 4th with 3 more secondary cases. The following day, two more cases (listed as `under investigation') were announced from the same city.

Yesterday's report (we may get another later today) adds 2 more secondary cases to kick off Epi Week 15.  As with the other 7 cases in this cluster, both are male, and their ages are 28 & 34.

While we've not seen any evidence of efficient or sustained community transmission of the MERS virus, the pace of new cases in 2019 continues to dwarf 2018.  As of today, we are just 14 cases shy of last year's total.
