Taiwan: BAPHIQ Interdicts More ASF Positive Food Products From China

Jiangsu Province, dried pork

#13,978

Despite a marked slowdown in ASF outbreaks by Chinese officials since the first of the year, Taiwan (and other countries) continue to interdict African Swine Fever contaminated food products manufactured in China as they are carried in by travelers.
Yesterday Taiwan announced their 35th and 36th ASF-positive seizures, with products originating from Jiangsu and Heilongjiang provinces.

Jiangsu Province, which last reported an outbreak in early January, has been a frequently cited source (see here, here, and here) of ASF positive food products brought into Taiwan. It has been more than 3 months since Heilongjiang last reported an outbreak as well.

We've seen reports from other countries, including Japan, South Korea, and Australia, of their interdiction of illegal pork products at their border.  And 3 weeks ago we saw the seizure of 1 million pounds of illegal pork products from China in the the United States (see USDA Statement On Seizure Of 1 Million Pounds Of Smuggled Chinese Pork).

The threat that ASF contaminated food products - whether originating from Eastern Europe or Asia - will spread the virus further is significant. An article published yesterday in Pigs Progress (see link below) describes the threat.
Preventing ASF entering Canada
Pig industry leaders and farmers alike throughout North and South America are extremely concerned that African Swine Fever will somehow infect pigs in their countries. What does Canada do to keep the virus out?
