Japan MAFF: 29th Farm Outbreak Of Classical Swine Fever

#14,162

Japan's Classical Swine Fever (CSF) woes continue with the 29th farm outbreak reported since the virus re-emerged last September,  after an absence of 26 years.

CSF, while similar in appearance and impact to African Swine Fever (ASF) - which is currently spreading in China and much of Asia - is caused by a different virus. Both are highly contagious among pigs, but neither disease poses a direct human health threat.
While it took more than 5 months to record the first 10 outbreaks, this  latest outbreak is the 19th reported over the past 4 months.
The OIE has also reported a tripling in the number of infected wild boar (rising from 218 in March to 655 in their last report) detected in Gifu and Aichi Prefectures.
