Japan MAFF Confirms 48th Farm Outbreak (Saitama) Of Classical Swine Fever

#14,511

Since September of last year Japan has been dealing with the return of Classical Swine Fever (CSF) after an absence of 26 years.  While similar in impact to ASF, CSF is caused by a different virus, and is considered a little easier to control.

Today Japan's MAFF reports another CSF outbreak at a farm in Saitama Prefecture - which reported their first case two months ago - apparently within the restricted movement area of the 47th outbreak.

In addition to the 48 farm outbreaks, more than 1200 wild boar have been discovered infected with the virus across 12 prefectures. The most recent OIE report adds two new prefectures (Shizouka and Yamanashi) to the list.
Summary of the wild boar surveillance (As of 31st October)
  • [Shizuoka prefecture (since 14th of September 2018)] Tested (RT-PCR): 395 wild boars (48 dead and 347 captured), Positive: 4 (4 dead) In Shizuoka prefecture, this is the first time that the CSF test of wild boar shows positive.
  • [Yamanashi prefecture (since 14th of September 2018)] Tested (RT-PCR): 17 wild boars (8 dead and 9 captured), Positive: 1 (1 captured) In Yamanashi prefecture, this is the first time that the CSF test of wild boar shows positive.

The territorial expansion of CSF continues to escalate in Japan - with 7 new prefectures reporting the virus (in wild boar and/or on farms) over the past 90 days - reinforcing just how difficult it can be to put a biological genie back into the bottle once it gets out.
